A powerful letter from Anne Whyte – What to do if your home is damaged in a fire
Anne Whyte lost her home to a fire – she wrote a powerful post about what to do if this happens.

There are several things which everyone can do to prepare for earthquakes and fires
Start up a Block Association/Communicate via Google Groups
I started a Google Group for our Block Association as a direct result of losing a neighbor in a house fire. Email serkes@berkeleyhomes.com and I’ll be happy to show you how to set one up for your block
Check your smoke detectors and change the batteries
The fire chief made it very clear that smoke detectors save lives because they save time. I don’t recall the exact numbers, but I recall that a fire doubles in size every 5-10 minutes.
Saving time is what saves lives.
Take Classes from Berkeley’s Office Of Emergency Services
I’ve taken First Aid, Light Search & Rescue, and Fire Suppression. These classes are given on Saturday morning, and fill up quickly.
