Lakeshore
Neighborhoods
I owe a debt of gratitude to this neighborhood. At the end of a long day, after showing a relocation client our amazing East Bay neighborhoods, we stopped at The Coffee Mill for a break. It was there that I asked myself “how can I do this even better”. At that moment, I realized I could create a website … and that was BerkeleyHomes.com’s moment of conception. Thank you, Coffee Mill!
Lakeshore’s neighborhood anchors are the Grand Lake Theater, Grand /Lakeshore Shopping Districts, and beautiful Lake Merritt.
The Grand Lake Theater, a grand movie palace built in the 20s is one of our favorite places to go for the movies. It often wins the “Best place to see a movie” East Bay Express polls. Like 3-D? The Grand Lake has a two projector system and it’s where I went to see The Force Awakens when the Star Wars movie opened.
The Grand’s neon signs light up on Friday & Saturday nights when they feature a Wurlitzer organ concert before the movies. Check out the marquee to see if Allen Michaan, the Renaissance Rialto operator, has posted one of his memorable political messages.
Up Grand, you’ll find Walden Pond’s new and used book store; nearby is The Alley, a piano bar that has featured Ron Dibble playing old favorites for decades.
Splash Pad Park, across from the theater, is home to Saturday’s Grand Lake Farmers’ Market.
The Lakeshore Drive shopping street features Arizmendi Bakery for great bread and pizza, a kosher butcher, Trader Joe’s, and lots of interesting shops.
