For 30 years he did a simple act of kindness – standing on the corner by his house and waving with big day-glow gloves!
And you can help celebrate what would have been his 101st Birthday
Where: The corner of Martin Luther King (MLK) and Oregon Street – Mr. Charles home
When: Tue 22 Mar 2011 7:30 – 9:00 am (and perhaps treat yourself to breakfast at the Home Made Cafe afterwards)
Here’s the 2011 Waving Day to celebrate Mr. Joseph Charles facebook page
This annual event has become a reunion of sorts…great stories, laughter, memories, and more. See you there!

People would go out of their way to drive by Mr. Charles’ house.
I sure did.
When we bought our home in Thousand Oaks, we had to have the sale confirmed by the court. I ran down Martin Luther King and shouted to Mr. Charles “Wish Me Luck”
He shouted out “GOOD Luck … and have a GOOD Day!”
And it was – the sale was confirmed by the court and we’ve been in our home since 1982!
That’s just one of the reasons I attended, and spoke at, Mr. Charles’ funeral.
And that’s why celebrating the life of Joseph Charles is definitely one of my 365 Things To Do In Berkeley … it’s #23!
Mr. Charles – Thank you for making people happy!
