From the owner to you
For the next owner of our wonderful Moraga Avenue home!
In 2001 my wife and I decided to leave our home in Benicia to be closer to work and to have more school options. In 2001 the market was peaking, and we needed to find a house that would work in a short timeframe. When we saw 4467 Moraga we knew it could work and it proved to be a choice that we grew to love more each of the 20 years we were there.
The house was amazingly flexible. I had room in the spacious living room for my grand piano while my wife could quietly relax in the downstairs den and knit while watching her favorite TV mysteries. We entertained and enjoyed dinners with neighbors and friends in the comfortable dining room or on the deck overlooking the neighborhood. The large bonus room downstairs started as a ping-pong and exercise room, then because space for my son to do ever-expanding projects. Once he went to college and I because self-employed it became my home office. And with the four-bedroom spaces we had room for family and guests as well as a separate office for my wife.
Originally the backyard had grass and a few bushes, but a landscape-architect friend (Cristina Breen of Arcadia Landscaping) offered to create a cottage garden that became my wife’s sanctuary to relax in the spring, summer, and fall. Filled with hummingbirds, butterflies, and squirrels, blooms from spring through the fall and our home was often full of fresh cut flowers. This landscaping was extended to the front patio as well – a sunny relaxing spot for morning coffee.
We also soon realized the many delights of the Piedmont Avenue neighborhood. Within a 15-minute walk, you can find numerous coffee shops, restaurants, 3 independent bookshops, two grocers (including the Piedmont Market with both a butcher and a cheese counter), a movie theater, several gyms, and innumerable other services. Look out from the back deck and you can see the 226-acre Mountain View Cemetery only a block away where you can explore, run, birdwatch, or go for dog walks. Over the years we made many local friends, which was especially lovely when you can walk to their homes for visits, book groups, knitting, or other neighborhood activities.
Why sell the house and move? In early 2021 I lost my wife to cancer. They say when one door closes another opens. And so I’ve met a new partner (now fiancé) and have moved to her home in Truckee, California.
More than anything I’m going to miss sipping coffee on winter mornings in front of the gas fireplace, walking streets and paths with my dog while greeting friends and neighbors, and the fact that any night we didn’t feel like cooking we could walk to a true neighborhood restaurant (where we were likely to see those same friends and neighbors). I hope you too have similar pleasures and find joy during your time at 4467 Moraga Ave.
Warmly,
Dan
