Here’s what make this home so special.. a note from George & Laura

My parents bought the house at 1818 San Lorenzo in 1941 just before my sister was born, and has been home to my family ever since. Living at 1818 San Lorenzo has been a life long experience for me: I was born at near by Alta Bates Hospital, in 1948, and though I moved out of the neighborhood in my twenties, it became my home once again when my father passed away in 1981 and my mother was unable to maintain the home and garden by herself. My wife, two year old daughter and I moved in so that all of us could continue to enjoy the home, garden and Thousand Oaks neighborhood.

My sister and I share many wonderful memories of the adventures we had in the Thousand Oaks neighborhood, and as my parents before me, I have enjoyed raising my family here. Just like she had done with my sister and me, my mother would walk my daughter to preschool near the Kensington Circle and later to Thousand Oaks Elementary School (where she was once a teacher). We all enjoyed walking our dog throughout the neighborhood- a great opportunity to stop and talk to neighbors, or enjoy the many different styles homes and gardens in the area.

The neighborhood has always been a very stable one. Very few people move out of the neighborhood once they have moved into it: I have neighbors that I have known for 45 years, and many more for at least 30 years. We don’t just greet each other and say hello once in awhile: we know each others families, friends and pets; we watch out for each other during illnesses, vacations and emergencies; we lend each other a hand. You reside in the middle, and enjoy the convenience, of a major metropolitan area: but it simply doesn’t feel that way. The Thousand Oaks neighborhood feels like a village.

In addition to the many things available within walking distance, transportation either by bus or by BART is very easy. The North Berkeley BART Station is 1.6 miles away, while the El Cerrito BART Station is 1.5 miles away. AC transit has local and transbay lines within a few blocks of the house.

My wife and I will miss our close proximity to Solano Avenue. Solano Avenue fills almost all of our daily needs: we grocery shop, drop off mail at the post office, place and pick up prescriptions at the pharmacy, wash those extra large loads of laundry at the laundry matt, and take clothes to the dry cleaner: all within walking distance of our home along Solano Avenue (where our dentist and optometrist are also conveniently located). Solano Avenue also provides many things we enjoy: we eat out at the many restaurants, grab coffee to go at Peet’s, watch movies at the local theaters, and enjoy pastries at the bakery.

1818 San Lorenzo is also convenient to the Gourmet Ghetto (home to Chez Panisse), the El Cerrito Plaza (home to Trader Joe’s and a wonderful Farmers Market), as well as many recreation areas. I recommend picking up a sandwich at one of the many delis on Solano before heading out on to the Bay Trail, Ohlone Trail, or Tilden Park (all of which offer many opportunities for walking, hiking, and cycling).

I have many wonderful memories of 1818 San Lorenzo and the Thousand Oaks neighborhood. May you enjoy the home and neighborhood as much as my family has!
